Lane Keep Assist is an active driver-assistance system that goes beyond simply warning the driver. When the vehicle begins to drift out of its lane without an activated turn signal, LKA applies gentle but firm corrective steering torque to guide the vehicle back into the centre of the lane. This makes it a key enabler for Level 2 semi-autonomous drivingwhen combined with Adaptive Cruise Control . While Lane Departure Warning only alerts the driver, LKA actively intervenes to prevent unintended lane crossings. More advanced versions, often called Lane Centering or Lane Tracing Assist , continuously steer the vehicle to keep it centred in the lane, reducing driver steering workload on highways and in traffic jams. The system uses a forward-facing camera to detect lane markings, road edges, and curbs. It operates effectively at speeds typically above 40–60 km/h and is a core component of modern ADAS packages from virtually all major automakers.
🔄 Decision Logic & Intervention Trigger
Constantly monitors the turn signal status — if the signal is active, LKA is suppressed to allow deliberate lane changes. When the vehicle approaches a lane boundary without a turn signal, the system calculates the time-to-lane-crossing and prepares for intervention.
🔄 Steering Torque ApplicationÂ
LKA applies a precise amount of electrically assisted steering torque to nudge the vehicle back toward the lane centre. Â Many systems also provide a haptic warning alongside the steering correction.

- Hands-on detection: Most LKA systems require the driver to keep their hands on the wheel. If hands are not detected, a warning escalates .
- Curve speed adaptation: Some systems reduce vehicle speed in tight curves to ensure LKA can safely follow the road.
- Traffic Jam Assist: A low-speed variant of LKA that works with ACC to handle stop-and-go traffic, steering the car at speeds below 60 km/h.
