Walk-away Lock and Approach Unlock
📄 Product Description
Walk-away Lock and Approach Unlock are keyless convenience features that allow a vehicle to automatically lock when you walk away and automatically unlock as you approach — all without ever touching the key fob or door handle. These features rely on proximity sensors and radio frequency identification technology built into the vehicle and the key fob. When you carry the authorized key fob or paired phone, the vehicle continuously detects its presence. This technology is a cornerstone of modern Passive Entry and Passive Start systems, eliminating the need for manual key presses. It is available across a wide range of brands — from luxury marques like Tesla, BMW, and Range Rover to mainstream manufacturers like Honda, Nissan, and Hyundai. Some systems now support Phone as a Key using Bluetooth Low Energy or
Ultra-Wideband for even greater convenience.
🚶 Approach Unlock
Detection Range:The vehicle detects an authorized key fob or smartphone within a proximity zone — typically 1.5 meters for most brands. Some systems detect within approximately 1 meter of the driver’s door
In many vehicles, only the driver’s door unlocks initially for security, with the option to unlock all doors via settings. Selective Unlocking: Some systems unlock only the approached side of the vehicle.
🧠 Advanced and Smart Features
- Exclude Home: Some systems allow disabling auto-lock/unlock at a designated home location to prevent unnecessary locking/unlocking.
- Battery Conservation: Frequent use of Approach Unlock and Walk-away Lock can lead to faster key fob battery drain. Some systems deactivate key searching after a few minutes to prolong battery life
- Key Inside Detection: The system tracks any keys left inside the vehicle to prevent locking them in.
- Aftermarket Retrofit: Companies like LR-CHIP and MoboKey offer retrofit solutions to add these features to vehicles that didn’t have them from the factory
