Wade sensing activation is one of the most useful off-road features for Defender, Discovery, and Range Rover owners. Using ultrasonic sensors mounted in the front bumper, the system measures water depth and displays it in real-time on the central touchscreen. If your vehicle has the sensors fitted, activation is a simple coding job that costs a fraction of the dealer price.
How Wade Sensing Works
Ultrasonic sensors in the front bumper emit sound waves that bounce off the water surface. The system calculates depth based on the time it takes for the waves to return. This data is displayed on the central screen alongside a maximum wade depth warning. The system also works with Terrain response activation to automatically raise air suspension (if fitted) when entering water.
Which Vehicles Have Wade Sensors?
Wade sensors are typically fitted to: Defender (all models), Discovery (all models), Range Rover (Autobiography and SV trims), Range rover sport l461 (HSE Dynamic and above). The sensors are small black circles in the front bumper, about 2cm in diameter. If you have these, wade sensing can be activated.
Maximum Wade Depths
Defender 90/110/130: 900mm (with wade mode). Discovery: 900mm. Range Rover: 850mm. Range rover sport l461: 850mm. F-PACE: 525mm. These are manufacturer figures with wade mode activated. Without wade mode, the vehicle may still enter water but without the depth display and automatic suspension adjustment.
Activation Process
Wade sensing activation activation is a CCF editing job that takes 15-20 minutes. The technician enables the wade display parameter and configures the sensor calibration. After activation, the depth display appears automatically when the vehicle enters water deeper than 100mm.
Safety Notes
Wade sensing activation is a display tool, not a safety system. Always follow the manufacturer's maximum wade depth guidelines. Never enter fast-flowing water. Test the water depth on foot before driving through. After wading, allow the vehicle to drain for 10 minutes before switching off.
