Terrain response 2 is Jaguar Land Rover's legendary off-road system that automatically adjusts throttle, brakes, differential, and suspension to suit the terrain. Many vehicles are shipped with only basic modes enabled, leaving Rock Crawl, Wade, and Sand modes locked. Activation is a simple coding job that unlocks the full capability of your 4x4.

What Is Terrain Response?

Terrain response 2 is an integrated system that manages the vehicle's powertrain, differentials, braking, and suspension to maximise traction on any surface. The system uses a central control module that can be configured for different terrains. Each mode has specific calibrations for throttle response, traction control, hill descent, and differential locking.

Available Modes

General Driving: Default mode for on-road use. Dynamic: Sportier on-road settings. Eco: Fuel-efficient on-road. Grass/Gravel/Snow: Reduced throttle, gentle traction control. Mud & Ruts: Increased wheel slip allowed, locked differentials. Sand: High wheel slip, aggressive power delivery. Rock Crawl: Ultra-low speed, maximum traction, locked diffs. Wade: Special wade mode with raised suspension and sensor monitoring.

Which Vehicles Can Have Terrain Response Activated?

All four-wheel-drive Jaguar Land Rover vehicles from 2010 onwards with the Terrain Response control module fitted. Range Rover (all models), Range rover sport l461 (all models), Defender (all models), Discovery (all models), F-PACE (AWD models). Two-wheel-drive models and some base trims may not have the hardware.

Activation Process

Terrain response 2 activation is a CCF editing job that takes 15-30 minutes per mode. The technician reads the current configuration, enables the desired modes, and saves the new settings. A test drive is recommended after activation to ensure all modes function correctly.

Wade Mode Special Considerations

Wade mode is a special case that requires the wade sensing hardware (ultrasonic sensors) to be fitted. If the sensors are present, wade mode can be activated alongside Terrain response 2. The mode raises the air suspension to maximum height and displays water depth on the central screen.
